Earth Day

Earth Day April 22,1970 achieved a rare political alignment, enlisting support from Republicans and Democrats, rich and poor, tycoons and labor leaders. The first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species acts.

Energy Saving Tips

•Keep those fans buzzing in summer instead of turning on the air conditioner.
•Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent ones. They last up to ten times longer and can use a quarter of the energy.
•Plug electronics into a power strip and flip off the switch when the gadgets aren’t in use.
•Switch off the light every time you leave a room.
•Set the thermostat to no lower than 78°F in the summer and no higher than 68°F in the winter.
•Place your desk next to a window and use natural light instead of a lamp.
•Close your curtains to keep out daytime summer heat or keep in nighttime winter warmth.
•Turn off the TV or video game console and play outside.
•Ask Mom or Dad to turn off the car instead of letting it idle while you're waiting.
•Ride a bike or walk instead of using the car.
•Carpool.

Water Saving Tips

At school and at home, you can help protect our water resources.

•Turn off the tap in your bathroom while you brush your teeth.
•Take shorter showers. (Get a timer and time yourself.)
•Don't let the water run constantly while you're washing or rinsing dishes.
•Fill a pitcher with tap water and put it in the fridge, rather than running the tap every time you want a cold drink!
•Clean sidewalks and driveways with a broom--not the water hose!
•Water your lawn in the early morning to avoid evaporation.
•Repair dripping faucets.
•Place a layer of mulch around trees and plants to retain water.
